Egon Schiele Based Work

Most recently I have been studying the artist Egon Schiele and his contorted depictions of the human body.
After taking a multitude of pictures in which I directed my subject to pose in various unnatural ways, I then went on to sketch them using the continuous line method akin to what Schiele did.

Gradually, I lessened the time I gave myself to draw as I wanted to focus more on getting the general shapes of the body rather than trying to be true to the source material as possible.
Once I had cemented my understanding of how to create more loose and fluid figurative sketches, I went on to use food colouring to colour my pieces. I primarily used bright solid colours as I feel it reflected the somewhat earthy tones that Schiele often used which created a sense of malaise.
Self portrait using goache watercolours and oil pastels for shading.
For my final piece I tried to incorporate more of my own style while staying true to Egon Schiele's work. To do this, I used the same method of continuous line drawing which I then went over with a black pen. To colour, I had to closely look at the different hues in my reference picture and then choose a shade that was similar but much more saturated to give that raw impression of flesh.
